Plasticity testing measures the deformation of unvulcanised rubber under a defined load and temperature, providing an indication of its flow behaviour and processability. It is used to assess raw material consistency, monitor the effects of mastication, and evaluate how a compound will behave during manufacturing. Beyond natural rubber, plasticity measurement is also used in silicone processing, medical materials and other applications where the flow behaviour and consistency of unvulcanised material are critical to quality.

For natural rubber, a plasticity measurement taken on an unaged specimen – the Wallace Plasticity Number – gives an immediate indication of material quality and processability, and is widely used for incoming raw material QC and mill mastication monitoring.

Where a fuller picture of material stability is needed, plasticity testing also underpins the Plasticity Retention Index (PRI) – a key quality indicator measuring resistance to thermal oxidative degradation, widely used for natural rubber grading.
