- Overview
In a De Mattia flex test, we need every sample to start from the same point. The piercing tool puts a tiny notch into the rubber sample at a defined position, which acts as a starting crack.
Then when the sample is flexed repeatedly, the user can accurately measure how quickly that crack grows and compare materials reliably.

- Application
Used to create a controlled starter crack (or notch) in the rubber specimen so the test can measure how cracks grow under repeated flexing. The test evaluates crack initiation resistance, crack growth rate and fatigue resistance of rubber.
